As parents consider the effects of opting their child out of state tests, one question that comes up frequently is What will my child be doing while her classmates take the tests? When one of my 7th grade students decided with her family that she wanted to opt out, she told me that she wanted to explain to others why she made that choice.  While her classmates bubbled in multiple choice answers and constructed five-paragraph essays, Charlize spent her time examining the Op-Ed pages of the New York Times and Washington Post, and researching, planning, and drafting the piece below.  I could not be prouder of the choice Charlize has made, more confident of her growth as a student this year, or more…
